Christian Rizzo named director of Centre Chorégraphique National (CNN) of Montpellier – Languedoc-Roussillon
On October 28th, 2014, the French government named the artist Christian Rizzo the new director of the prestigious Centre Chorégraphique National (CNN) of Montpellier – Languedoc-Roussillon. Starting in January 2015, he will succeed choreographer Mathilde Monnier(*).
Originally a regional dance center in 1980 led by the choreographer Dominique Bagouet, it became Centre Chorégraphique National (CNN) of Montpellier – Languedoc-Roussillon in the mid-eighties and joined the new network of choreographic centers in France. In 1992, under the leadership of Mathilde Monnier, the Center kept on expanding with experimental programs, new spaces, and original trainings such as the Master’s degree (ex.e.r.ce program), becoming one of the most innovative places for contemporary dance in France.
Based upon this rich history, Christian Rizzo will develop an International Choreographic Institut (ICI) dedicated to creation, transmission, and education. Conceived as an Experimental Academy and a Caravansérail, Rizzo’s project plans to enhance the influence of the center as a platform of exchange in relation to other disciplines of contemporary creation. Special attention will also be given to young artists and to digital creative innovation.
(*) Mathilde Monnier has been the Director of the national agency, Centre National de la Danse, since January 2014.
