Cultural Sector in France : a Benefit for the Economy
On January 3rd, 2014 in France, the Ministries of Finance and Culture jointly published a report about the benefits of the cultural sector for the French economy. For the first time, the two institutions worked together to link culture and the economy.
In France, much of the cultural sector is supported by the government who allocates budgets to the regional administrations. Those allocations help emerging artists and various cultural programs throughout the country.
Although these expenditures are often criticized, the report highlights the economic benefits of cultural activity in France, which represents as much as 3.2% of the GDP.
The newspaper Le Monde emphasizes that this figure does not include the effects associated with tourism and development cities known mostly through their cultural events.
