On September 19, 2011, the medal of Chevalier of the Legion of Honor was conferred on Ronald P. Stanton for his role as patron of the arts in a ceremony held at the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in New York.

Tremendously moved by Jean-Baptiste Lully’s 1676 masterpiece Atys, which he saw performed by Les Arts Florissants and conducted by William Christie at the Opera-Comique in Paris in 1987, Mr. Stanton has played a key role in bringing this opera to audiences once again by providing the financial backing for a 2011 international tour. In the New York leg of this tour, Atys will be performed at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) through September 24.

Francois Delattre, Ambassador of France, and Philippe Lalliot, French Consul General, were present at this reception which was hosted by Antonin Baudry, Cultural Counselor of the French Embassy, who warmly welcomed the 130 guests at the start of the official ceremony. Karen Brooks Hopkins President of the Brooklyn Academy of Music, also addressed the guests before the ceremony. Maestro William Christie, founder of Les Arts Florissants, presided over the actual medal conferral.

Order of the Legion of Honor The highest award bestowed by the French government, the National Order of the Legion of Honor was founded by Napoleon Bonaparte to recognize outstanding achievement in the military as well as in the public and private sectors. The Order is made up of three ranks — chevalier, officier, commandeur — and two high offices (“dignités”) — grand officier, and grand croix. Recipients are named by decree signed by the President of the Republic. The Legion of Honor may be awarded to foreign citizens, though such recognition is relatively rare. American honorees include John Ashbery, Renée Fleming, Barbra Streisand, and Elie Wiesel, as well as hundreds of World War II veterans.
