The Getty Lands an Édouard Manet Pastel
The J. Paul Getty Museum has recently announced their procurement of a prized pastel by the late 19th century French painter Édouard Manet, along with another 19th century masterpiece, a drawing by Georges Seurat, a French painter of the post-Impressionist era. Portrait of Julien la Rochenoire (1882) was on loan to the Boston Museum of Fine Arts from 1987 to 1996. Then Christie’s New York auctioned it in 2002 (for $779,500). It has also been exhibited at the Galerie Manzi-Joyant and at The École des Beaux Arts in Paris. The piece will be taken in to the Getty’s immense collection beginning June 3rd.
Portrait of Julien la Rochenoie is the first pastel by Manet to enter the Getty, and will be a great addition to the Getty’s collection of two other of Manet’s works, The Rue Mosnier with Flags (1878), and Portrait of Madame Brunet (1860-63). Made informally for a friend, it “is a particularly intimate and personal work, offering the perfect complement to our holdings of this great artist’s work”, as said by Timothy Potts, the museum’s director.
Moving away from his usual monochrome style, the painting’s background is set against a salmon and blue colored wallpaper of a swirling pattern, which heightens the psychological energy of the subject’s face. The subject, Émile Charles Julien de la Rochenoire, was an animal and landscape painter who had known Manet for many years. Manet had created some 89 notable pastel pieces, of which many are of friends.
Aside from the two other masterpieces residing at the museum, The Getty proudly welcomes this new addition to their collection alongside Manet's watercolor piece, Bullfight (1865) and will complement the Museum’s holdings of 19th century pastels and a group of major watercolors and drawings by Renoir, Van Gogh, Gaugin, and Seurat.
The painting will be ready to go on display in the Museum’s West Pavilion June 3-August 24, 2014.
