James Lee Byars, New York/Paris

August 18, 2014 | By Dorothée Charles

From June to September 2014: exhibitions and performances are presented at MoMA PS1 in New York and at the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain in Paris to celebrate the American artist James Lee Byars (Detroit, 1932- Cairo, 1997).

MoMA PS1 presents the most comprehensive museum survey of James Lee Byars organized in North America since his death. The exhibition 1/2 an Autobiography, which includes documentation and works across a range of mediums confronts the absence of Byars himself, and more generally highlights the inherently incomplete summary that a retrospective offers of an artist’s life.

Dates: June 15–September 7, 2014
Location: MoMA PS1
