Mircea Cantor in Conversation at the French Embassy

March 14, 2012 | By French Culture

On March 5th the Cultural Service of the French Embassy welcomed Mircea Cantor, recipient of the 2011 Marcel Duchamp Prize, and the critic Steven Henry Madoff, for a special discussion on the occasion of Cantor’s exhibition, Restless: Films and Other Works, at the Museum of Moving Image in New York.

Cantor introduced the audience to excerpts of his work including, I decided not to save the world,Tracking Happiness and The Landscape is Changing. In many of his pieces Cantor intervenes in the practical functions of the world to slyly readjust the relationship of the viewer to their surroundings.

His first solo exhibition in the United States, which is co-presented by the Romanian Cultural Institute in New York and the Museum of the Moving Image, includes four ground-breaking videos: Tracking Happiness, Zooooooom, The leash of the dog that was longer than his life, and I decided not to save the world – as well as a series of photographs and drawings.

Author and critic Steven Henry Madoff, was executive editor of ARTnews from 1987 to 1994, and has written several books on art, including Art School (Propositions for the 21st Century)as well as articles for Time Magazine, The New York Times, Artforum, and Modern Painter, among many others.

This event was organized in partnership with the Romanian Cultural Institute in New York.
