Remembering Trisha Brown (1936-2017)

April 3, 2017 | By French Culture Arts

The forest was my first art lesson – I climbed trees, played sports, hunted and fished” – Trisha Brown.

It is with great sadness that we learned the passing of Trisha Brown, a remarkable dancer and choreographer admired by French audiences.

Trisha Brown’s forty-five years of choreographic research altered and revolutionized the dance landscape. During her career she created more than 100 choreographic works and operas, as well as numerous graphic art creations.
Trisha Brown pushed the boundaries of contemporary dance: Combining rigorous visual order, fluid and sensuous abstraction and emotional narration, her style challenged virtuosity and celebrated pure movement in the most natural aspect of dance and body impulses.

Her influence in Europe was huge and stirred much enthusiasm in France, where many of her new works premiered, among them “Set and Reset” in 1983 which became the most beloved work ever made in postmodern dance. Her works can be seen in several dance companies including Paris Opera Ballet, Lyon Opera Ballet and Ballet de Lorraine.
In 2004, the French government named Ms. Brown Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres.

Audiences near and far adored her and her work.
Her legacy is immense and will forever remain in our collective memory.
