A Salute to Street Artist Bilal Berreni, aka Zoo Project
It is with tremendous sadness that we have learned of the death of young artist Bilal Berreni in Detroit this past summer due to tragic circumstances that have not been fully elucidated.
In the spring of 2011, the 23-year-old French street artist returned to Tunisia to "see a revolution" in progress. Over the course of several weeks, Berreni painted the cities' walls with faces of Tunisian revolutionaries and Libyan refugees on the frontier between Tunisia and Libya.
Last July, Berreni was found dead in Detroit, Michigan. Identification of his body took many months. Local police have reached out to the Detroit artistic community, hoping to gain new insight into the circumstances of his tragic death.
Born in Paris' 20th arrondissement, Berreni began skillfully covering the walls of his neighborhood with murals at just 15 years old.
We offer our utmost condolences to the parents and friends of Berreni at this difficult time.
