Summer Festivals in France: Dance and Theater Roundup

July 18, 2013 | By French Culture

Summer is the high-season for Dance and Theater festivals in France. From Lille to Marseille by way of Avignon, performance festivals abound. Long-running, world-renowned festivals such as the Festival d’Avignon (the oldest festival in France), or the Festival International de Théâtre et de la Rue in Aurillac (the largest street theater festival in Europe) punctuate the summer landscape. Other programs include the Festival Latitudes Contemporaines in Lille, recommended for the audacity of its programming, and the Festival Actoral, in Marseille, a multidisciplinary festival bringing together poets, playwrights, performers, and many others.

The festival season continues well into the fall with highlights such as Mettre en Scène in Rennes or the Festival du Cirque Actuel (CIRCA), in Auch, and of course, the Festival d'Automne in Paris.

The Theater and Dance Office of the Arts Department at the Cultural Services of the French Embassy has gathered a list of festivals that present the most innovative work from across the vibrant contemporary performance world. For a complete list of summer festivals in France, read Telerama’s annual summer festival guide. You can also check out their Dance and Theater specific roundups.
