In April 2016, playwright, actor, and director Wajdi Mouawad was appointed director of the Théâtre national de la Colline in Paris. He succeeds Stéphane Braunschweig, who has been appointed as director of the Odéon-Théâtre de l’Europe. Wajdi Mouawad's plays raise the questions of the memory and the heritage around the world. Inspired by his own international background, Mouawad intends to bring together artists, writers, thinkers in order to reveal the political nature of writing.

Wajdi Mouawad

Born in 1968, Wajdi Mouawad spent his childhood in Lebanon. In 1977, his family moved in France in order to escape civil war, and eventually immigrated to Canada (Québec) in 1983. From 2000 to 2004, Mouawad served as artistic director for the Théâtre de Quat' Sous of Montreal. In 2002 he was appointed Chevalier de l'Ordre National des Arts et des Lettres in France, and in 2004 he was awarded the Prix de la Francophonie. In 2005, he declined France's prestigious Molière Award in protest of what he perceived as the indifference of French theatre directors to contemporary playwrights. That same year, he founded two new theatre companies devoted to new plays: the Abé carré cé carré in Montréal and the Au Carré de l'hypoténuse in Paris. In 2009, he was associated artist to the 63rd Festival d'Avignon with his theatrical saga Le Sang des Promesses (Littoral, Incendies, Forêts, Ciels). From 2007 to 2012, he served as artistic director of the French Theater of the National Arts Center in Ottawa.

Théâtre national de la Colline, Paris

The Théâtre national de la Colline is one of the five national theatres dedicated to drama which are entirely supported by the French Ministry of Culture. The other four are the Odéon-Théâtre, the Comédie-Française, the Théâtre National de Chaillot, and the Théâtre National de Strasbourg. Its status as a national theatre mandates that its mission is to promote contemporary works and to educate the public, hence the Colline mainly stages works of the twentieth century.
