Born in France, Olivier Py studied at ENSATT and at the National Conservatory of Dramatic Art Paris, and at Institute Catholique for theology. In 1988, his first play, des oranges et des ongles, directed by Didier Lafaye, premièred at the Essaïon Theatre in Paris. In the same year he founded his own company “Les inconvénients des boutures” and staged his own plays.

He became the director of the National Dramatic Centre in Orléans in 1998, and the director of the Odéon-Théâtre de l'Europe in 2007. This year, he starts his tenure as the director of the Avignon Festival.

His work, Requiem pour Srebrenica, toured in France, the former Yugoslavia, Canada, the U.S., and in Jordan. Some of his other critically acclaimed works include Épître aux jeunes acteurs (2001), Le soulier de Satin by Paul Claudel (2003) l’Orestie (2008), La Vraie Fiancée (2008). In 2008, he directed the three fairy tales of Grimm: l’Eau de la vie, La jeune fille, and le diable et le moulin. Over the years, he also produced numerous operas, such as the adaptation of Richard Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde and Tannhäuser, which won him the Grand Prix de la critique in 2005.

Most of his works, including his first novel, Paradis de tristesse (2005), are published by Actes Sud. Four of his plays (Theatres, Epistle to Young Actors, The Exaltation of the Labyrinth, Youth) have been published by University Press of America. Olivier Py is a recipient of several awards. And under the pseudonym of "Miss Knife", a cabaret singer, Olivier Py performs internationally songs that he wrote himself.
