The Cultural Services of the French Embassy (l’Institut Français des Etats-Unis – Villa Albertine) is seeking a savvy self-starter to serve as Communications Officer and manage our email marketing, websites, and internal calendars, and contribute to the creation of publicity materials across verticals. This is a full-time, permanent, in-person position in New York. Projected start date: October 1, 2022.  

About Us  

The Cultural Services of the French Embassy promotes the best of French arts, literature, cinema, digital innovation, language, and higher education across the US. Based in New York City, Washington D.C., and eight other cities across the country, the Cultural Services brings artists, authors, intellectuals, and innovators to cities nationwide. It also builds partnerships between French and American artists, institutions and universities on both sides of the Atlantic. In 2021, it launched a new cultural institution, Villa Albertine, that is creating a network for arts and ideas spanning France and the United States. In New York, through its bookshop Albertine, it fosters French-American exchange around literature and the arts. 

Responsibilities 

The Communications Officer’s duties entail email marketing operations, including writing and editing copy in collaboration with program officers, and managing an email database.  

They are also involved in all aspects of the organization’s websites, handling a range of responsibilities that include liaising with web designers and developers, routine site and content maintenance, and content curation and editing to ensure sites align with the goals and objectives of the company.  

The Communications Officer also manages internal calendars and contributes to the production of public-facing print documents, such as brochures and promotional flyers.  

A full breakdown follows: 

Web  

  • Encourage and facilitate consistent, creative, and unified web content across the organization’s web properties. 
  • Liaise with internal staff to coordinate the production of new website articles and review them for cohesion with brand guidelines, photo quality, and English grammar and syntax   
  • Collect and analyze web analytics and similar data; identify opportunities to improve search engine optimization (SEO), time on site, web traffic, and other relevant metrics
  • Assist employees with use of company websites through one-on-one support, user guides, and training sessions
  • Maintain current knowledge of best practices and emerging developments in web content and design 

Email  

  • In collaboration with the Director of Communications, design and implement direct email marketing campaigns. This includes (but is not limited to) developing copy and subject lines, editing email templates and headers in InDesign, building email lists, liaising with internal staff, owning a comprehensive calendar 
  • Report on email marketing campaigns and results; use results to determine ROI, make suggestions for improvements, and establish best practices 
  • Ensure prompt, accurate, and error-free communication with our community to build loyal relationships and minimize unsubscribes 
  • Maintain an organization-wide email database and ensure syncing with the organization’s CRM tool  
  • Upgrade email sends through sourced graphics, customization, calls-to-action, and additional advanced features 
  • Ensure emails follow industry standards and privacy policies 

General Communications  

  • Maintain internal communications calendar  
  • Contribute to the creation of various internal and public-facing communication documents such as brochures, flyers, presentations, calendars, and more, as needed  
  • Adapt designed templates of communication documents as needed  
  • Perform other related duties as assigned 

Requirements 

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s in marketing or related discipline 
  • 3+ years of digital marketing, marketing analytics, or email marketing experience, preferably in a related industry 
  • Strong communication skills – written and oral 
  • Impeccable grammar and writing skills  
  • Ability to track, measure, and report on results of email marketing and web campaigns to determine ROI 
  • Sufficient experience in marketing automation and content management systems  
  • Excellent analytical skills and ability to provide actionable insights from data 
  • HTML Knowledge preferred 
  • Skilled in problem solving and project management 
  • Knowledge of website management, analytics, design, and SEO best practices and standards. Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, MailChimp, and WordPress preferred

Language Requirements 

  • French (reading, speaking, writing): Advanced or Bilingual  
  • English (reading, speaking, writing): Bilingual or Native speaker   

Eligibility, Salary & Benefits

  • This is a full-time (40 hours/week), in-person position at the picturesque Payne Whitney Mansion on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, located at 972 Fifth Avenue (at 79th Street).    
  • The annual salary is $60,576 ($5,048/month), plus a monthly transportation stipend of $120.  
  • Employees are granted 25 vacation days per year plus 12 overtime compensation days, totaling to 37 days off (7+ weeks). Please expect to work occasionally in evenings and on weekends.   
  • Candidates must have American citizenship, a Green Card, or a work permit (pending a Green Card). Only applicants meeting these conditions will be considered.
