Villa San Francisco, Wide Open on the Future!

On August 25, Ambassador Philippe Etienne and other distinguished guests inaugurated the Villa San Francisco, a new cultural institution in the Bay Area promoting international dialogue between artists and communities. A hub for bold conversations on today's most pressing issues, it will host exciting events, innovative artist residencies & more.

Villa San Francisco: a new generation of artistic residencies

In the collective imagination, a “Villa” is a historical place to host artists in residency. It is rooted in the beginning of the 19th century when France established the Académie de France in Rome at the heart of Villa Medici. A move which was then mimicked through the creation of Casa de Velázquez in Madrid and Villa Kujoyama in Kyoto. Villa San Francisco disrupts the original concept of Villas to meet the pioneering spirit of San Francisco. It aims to lead a transdisciplinary dialogue to empower artists to shape the future. It will offer artists tailor-made support at the heart of Silicon Valley to engage bold collaborations in connection with Bay Area communities.

An ambitious project: Empowering artists to shape the future

Villa San Francisco will offer support built on 3 complementary pillars:

  • Artist in residence programs connected to communities in the Bay Area to engage international and local artists in a dialogue. Every year, 4 artists will reside at the Villa for 4 to 6 weeks supported by a “local community guide”, a local artist who will guide them in their sensory discovery of the territory and its inhabitants. They will participate in immersive residency programs with art, tech, science visits and meetings of meetings and collaborations with researchers, scientists, civil society, entrepreneurs and artists from Silicon Valley
  • Year-round community events and a large-scale annual event, Night of Ideas, which gathers more than 5,000 people every year. Feeding conversation and bringing communities together through various forms of expression and events co-produced with local partners.
  • An interactive online platform will act as a creative hub, enabling artists to share projects that are conceived and coproduced during residencies at Villa San Francisco. An immersive experience through different forms of narration: writing, sound, video, music, illustration, game...

A unique place created by and for artists

Key player in the San Francisco Bay Area, Studio Mortazavi entirely redesigned the apartment made available by the General Consulate of France in San Francisco to welcome artists. It created a space matching the Villa’s ambitions, thought as a bridge between France and Northern California, woven through with the powerful works of French and Californian artists: Agnès Varda, JR, Nathalie Du Pasquier, Jay Nelson, Yvonne Mouser, Yves Behar, Jesse Schesinger & Jonathan Anzalone.
