2021 Étant Donnés Contemporary Art Grantees

Étant donnés Contemporary Art is the only French-American fund for contemporary art. Initiated by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy and FACE Foundation, with the support of leading partners and sponsors, it aims to foster collaborations between visual artists, curators and institutions on both sides of the Atlantic. 

We are pleased to announce the 14 grantees selected this year by the Étant Donnés jury, with a total grant allocation of $195,000.

Artistic Projects: 10 American institutions will receive a grant for exhibitions involving French or France-based artists:

-Black Cube, A Nomadic Art Museum (Englewood, CO) for the exhibit Orisons presenting a special commission in situ by Marguerite Humeau (cur: Cortney L. Stell); 

-New Museum (New York, NY) for the project New Museum 2021 Triennial including the artists Alex Ayed and Gaëlle Choisne (cur: Margot Norton and Jamillah James); 

-Artpace San Antonio (San Antonio, TX) for the solo show of Ivan Argote (cur: Pilar Tompkins Rivas); 

-Los Angeles Contemporary Archive (Los Angeles, CA) for the solo show by Clémence de Montgolfier titled Impossible Mediations: Silence and Oblivion are Information (cur: Hailey Loman); 

-California College of the Arts - Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts (San Francisco, CA) for the group show Other Repercussions including works by Tarek Atoui, Marcos Avila Forero, Angelica Mesiti, Laure Prouvost and Cyprien Gaillard (cur: Anthony Huberman); 

-New Orleans Jazz Museum (New Orleans, LA) for Southwind, a solo show by Maxime Berthou (cur: Amy Mackie); 

-Wesleyan University (Middletown, CT) for the group show The Language in Common including Julien Creuzet and Alice Notley (cur: Benjamin Chaffee); 

-CAC Cincinatti (Cincinnati, OH) for Be Water: Liquidity as Method, an group show including works by Cecilia Bengolea, Paul Maheke, Ntjam Josèfa, Marcos Avila Forero, and Saodat Ismailova (cur: Amara Antilla and Clelia Coussonnet);

-Mishkin Gallery (New York, NY) for Who Speaks for the Oceans?, a group show including Jacques Cousteau, Chris Marker, Marguerite Humeau and Josèfa Ntjam (cur: Alaina Claire Feldman and David Gruber); 

-Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (New York, NY) for the solo exhibition by Etel Adnan (cur: Katherine Brinson). 

Curatorial Fellowships : 1 curator will receive a grant for upcoming research trips in France:

Ana Iwataki (University of Southern California), will receive a grant for upcoming research trip in France, for her project Telepathies.

Artists Residencies : 3 French artists are awarded a grant:

-Ittah Yoda (Kai Yoda et Virgile Ittah) will be in residency at ISCP (New York, NY) for their project CHRONOS

-Marie Angeletti will partner with Moma PS1 (Queens, NY) for her project Artist Space 202202 Delirious New York

-Ezra Jérémie Teboul will partner with The Computer Music Center at Columbia University (New York, NY) for his project titled Beyond Circuits


American institutions and curators, as well as French artists are encouraged to apply to the Étant donnés Open Call that will open in the Fall of 2021

Etant donnés Contemporary Art is a program of FACE Foundation, developed in partnership with the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the United States, with lead funding from French Ministry of Culture, Institut Français - Paris, Helen Frankenthaler Foundation, Ford Foundation, Chanel USA, and ADAGP.
