Étant donnés is the only French-American fund for Contemporary Art. Initiated by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy and FACE Foundation, with the support of leading partners and sponsors, it aims to foster collaborations between visual artists, curators and institutions on both sides of the Atlantic.
We're happy to announce the new grantees selected by Etant Donnés' Committee for projects taking place between November 2017 and June 2018.
The 2017 committee includes the following experts: Naomi Beckwith, Curator at the MCA – Chicago; Marie-Cécile Burnichon, Deputy director of artistic exchanges at Institut Français - Paris; Jenny Jaskey, Director of The Artist’s Institute – NYC; Camille Morineau, Artistic director of la Monnaie de Paris; Annabelle Ténèze, Director of Les Abattoirs/FRAC Midi-Pyrénées – Toulouse; and Adam Weinberg, Director of the Whitney Museum.
5 curators received a Curatorial fellowship for upcoming research trips in France : Stephen Bridges (Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University, Lansing), Valérie Rousseau (American Folk Art Museum, New York), Alexandra Schwartz, James Voorhies (California College of the Arts, San Francisco and Oakland), and Hamza Walker (LAXART, Los Angeles).
6 American institutions are the grants recipients for exhibitions involving French or France-based artists: Contemporary Art Center (Cincinatti) for a solo show of Kader Attia; Hammer Museum (Los Angeles) for a group show including Mathieu K.Abonnenc, Fayçal Baghriche, Latifa Echakhch and Kapwani Kiwanga; The Jewish Museum (NYC) for a solo show of Marc Camille Chaimowicz; San Francisco Art Institute for a solo show of French-Swiss architect Philippe Rahm; National Museum of Women in the Arts (Washington) for a group show including contemporary French artists such as Lucy Orta, Elsa Sahal, Anne-Marie Schneider, Laure Tixier; the Walker Art Center (Minneapolis) for a series of performances by Laure Prouvost on the occasion of her solo show; and a special project by Tarek Atoui at Marfa Live Arts (Texas).
1 French artist was awarded the Residency grant developed in partnership with the Professional Committee of French Art Galleries (Comité professionnel des galeries d'art): the laureate is the photographer Thibault Brunet, who will be in residency in New York in 2018 in partnership with Aperture Foundation for his project titled “Soleil Noir”.
The next call for applications will be launched in December 2017 for projects taking place between July 2018 and June 2019, stay tuned !
