The Thing About France: Lauren Collins

The Thing About France is a podcast where cultural figures explore the fascinating and complicated relationship between France and America. In Season 3: Americans in Paris, guest host Liesl Schillinger interviews Americans in Paris during the COVID-19 pandemic via Zoom from her New York apartment.

Listen to the third episode of Season 3, featuring famed writer and European transplant Lauren Collins on parenting in French and in France, daily interactions she missed during “le confinement” (“lockdown” in French), and dealing with grief during the pandemic.

After spending her childhood in Wilmington, North Carolina and the beginning of her professional life in New York City, Collins experienced what she calls "an improbable midlife trajectory” when love brought her from London to Geneva, and now to Paris. Her book, When in French: Love in a Second Language, tells the story of falling in love with a man whose name she could not correctly pronounce and her subsequent messy love affair with French. Today, she writes about the enigmas of language, culture, and identity for the New Yorker

In this episode of The Thing About France, Lauren muses about naming and raising bi-cultural children (11:40), attending a meeting of the Académie française (28:45), and what she most looks forward to in le deconfinement (36:00).

The Thing About France is produced by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the US.
