Abdellah Taïa

From April 20-May 31, 2020, revolutionary novelist and filmmaker Abdellah Taïa will be on tour in New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles in promotion of his latest novel, A Country for Dying.

Born in the public library in Morocco where his father worked, Abdellah Taïa learned to love books from a young age. In 2006, he made history by coming out in his home country, where homosexuality is illegal. His continued commitment to fighting for gay rights has made him one of the most important writers of his generation. Now living in Paris, he is the author of eight critically acclaimed novels, even adapting some of them to film.

About the Book: A Country for Dying

Set in Paris in the summer of 2010, A Country for Dying follows the lives of several characters: Zahira, a Moroccan prostitute, facing the sting of unrequited love and still grieving the suicide of her father decades before; Zannouba, formerly known as Aziz, preparing both mentally and emotionally for her gender confirmation surgery; Mojtaba, a gay revolutionary from Iran whom Zahira takes in during the month of Ramadan; and Allal, Zahira’s first love, as he travels from Morocco to Paris to find her.

Taking an intimate look into the inner lives of emigrants as they struggle to balance their dreams with a harsh reality, this poignant novel explores the schism of the postcolonial world and the price of progress for a better future.

Translated by Emma Ramadan from French, A Country for Dying will be published in English on May 19, 2020.
