Paul B. Preciado

In October 2020, writer, philosopher, and curator Paul B. Preciado will be on tour in the US to promote his most recent book, An Apartment on Uranus.

Paul B. Preciado is a philosopher, writer, and curator whose work centers around applied and theoretical topics relating to gender, identity, pornography, architecture, and sexuality. Born Beatriz Preciado, he began his "slow transition" in 2010 to align himself with his gender identity. A Fulbright scholar, Preciado moved from Spain to New York to get his MA in Philosophy at the New School, and later attended Princeton, where he wrote his dissertation Pornotopía: Architecture and Sexuality in Playboy During the Cold War. Since then, he has been a professor at Université Paris VIII, as well as the director of the independent study program at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona. He is currently the Curator of Public Programs of documenta 14, Kassel and Athens. He also writes a column on gender, sexuality, and love for Libération's website.

About the Book: An Apartment on Uranus

Drawing from Karl Heinrich Ulrich’s concept of uranism—the idea of a third sex who “love differently”—Preciado writes of his dream to live on Uranus, in an apartment far beyond existing power structures pertaining to gender and race. As he recounts his transition from Beatriz to Paul B., Preciado moves beyond gender transition to consider transition in general, from political to cultural to sexual. He explores societal issues ranging from the technological appropriation of the uterus, to the harassment of trans children, to the rise of neo-fascism of Europe. A reflection on some of the most pressing political and social issues in our modern world, An Apartment on Uranus is a bold and necessary book for our times.

Translated by Charlotte Mandell from French, An Apartment on Uranus was published in English in January 2020.
