About the book: The Cook

The Cook tells the story of Mauro, a young self-taught cook, as he comes of age over a fifteen-year period. Told from the point of view of an unnamed female narrator, the book follows him from Paris to Berlin, Thailand, and Burma to find his path in life: a rediscovery of his hunger for cooking and his appetite for life.

De Kerangal’s lyricism and vivid prose brings readers right into the kitchen, conjuring moods, sensations and flavors, rendering this novel more a poetic biographical essay on Mauro’s life and career than a novel.

Translated from the French by Sam Taylor, The Cook will be published on April 2, 2019 from Farrar, Straus and Giroux.
