Philippe Vasset

Philippe Vasset was born on June 7th, 1972 in Tours, and raised in Orléans, a city whose geography and architecture greatly fascinated him. Reading popular novels, spy novels and science-fiction novels here also influenced his career and writing choices. Veering between literary and scientific fields, he chose to join a preparatory course at the prestigious Lycée Fénelon in Paris, and got a double master’s degree in philosophy and geography. In 1995 his studies led him to Washington D.C., which he calls “sci-fi city”, and where he was recruited by a private investigations firm. Upon his return to Paris in 2001, he was astonished by the geographical changes as a result of urban expansion. As a journalist and editor-in-chief for Africa Energy Intelligence, he later became a rather mysterious and crafty investigator himself. In the meantime, he also started writing fiction novels, almost every two years.

In 2003, Vasset published his first book entitled Exemplaire de demonstration published by Fayard. His Un Livre blanc, published in 2007, tells the story of a “zones blanches” exploration for abandoned IGN (National Geographic Institute) detected areas in Ile-de-France. His seventh opus, entitled La Conjuration (published in 2013 by Fayard), was written through blood, sweat and tears, while listening to 80’s punk synthesizers. The story recounts a cult’s journey and navigation through secret Parisian passageways. From “zones blanches” to modern religious cults, Vasset’s fictions are non-standard and go beyond literary genres; molded by reality, their author calls them “exofiction”. Press reviews suggest that Vasset’s unusual style of writing may be forging a new genre of geographical literature.

Vasset participated in French & American Journals: A Literary Salon, an event presented by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in New York on November 7th & 8th.
