About the book: Small Country

In 1992, ten-year-old Gabriel finds life in his expatriate neighborhood in Burundi close to paradise. He and his friends are the kings of their cul-de-sac, enjoying days of laughter and adventure, but little do they know that their peaceful existence will be transformed when Burundi and Rwanda are hit by civil war and genocide. Small Country tells of a loss of innocence through the eyes of a child, caught in the pandemonium of history.

A bestseller in France, Small Country won the Prix Goncourt des Lycéens and is being published in thirty countries around the world; translated into English by Sarah Ardizzone, it was published in the United States in June from Hogarth.
