About the book: Hear Our Defeats

Hear Our Defeats tells the story of Assem, a French intelligence officer who is tasked with tracking down a former member of the US Special Forces who is suspected of drug trafficking during the War in Afghanistan. During his travels, he meets Miriam, an Iraqi archaeologist who is racing against time to save ancient artifacts across the Middle East from the destruction brought by ISIS.

Gaudé meditates on turning points in world history, weaving his reflections into the two gripping storylines, evoking Hannibal’s failed march on Rome and the burning of his fleet on the waters of the Mediterranean; Grant’s pursuit of the Confederates into rural Virginia; Robert E. Lee’s surrender at Appomattox Courthouse; and Emperor Haile Selassie’s swift retreat from Ethiopia.

Translated from the French by Alison Anderson, Hear Our Defeats has been published by Europa Editions on January 22, 2019.
