The Cultural Services of the French Embassy (IFEU-VA) is offering a full-time position: Director of Development and Partnerships.  

Full-time position based in New York City starting September 1, 2024

Potential candidates must be legally permitted to stay in and work for the Embassy of France in the United States (i.e. they must possess an A visa or a green card, maintain American nationality, or have a work permit pending acquisition of an already-granted green card).

Brief Presentation

Under the supervision of the Cultural Counselor of France and Director of Villa Albertine, the Director of Development and Partnerships is responsible for fundraising and partnerships for the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in its three main areas of action: culture, education, and university and research cooperation. In this capacity, he/she plays a key role in engaging the community of partners and donors of the Cultural Services and Villa Albertine. Additionally, he/she oversees a team responsible for coordinating events held at Villa Albertine’s New York headquarters and managing all aspects related to bestowing honorary medals by the French government.


Job Description

  • Manage all aspects of fundraising for the Cultural Services, from identifying and soliciting prospects to developing campaign strategies, sponsorship packages, and patronage proposals.
  • Identify and conduct research on prospective funders (companies, individuals, and foundations) with strategic interests that align with the Cultural Services’ mission.
  • Prepare one-pagers, talking points, and other background materials for prospective funders that effectively and succinctly illustrate the Cultural Services’ work and impact.
  • Coordinate and expand fundraising initiatives in the 10 cities where Villa Albertine is present in the United States.
  • Manage follow-up with donors and partners of Villa Albertine and the Cultural Services of the French Embassy.
  • Collaborate with the Cultural Counselor to facilitate outreach and relationship-building with high-level donors through tailored engagement strategies, notably as part of Villa Albertine’s cultural concierge service (organizing exceptional experiences in connection with French cultural institutions), in partnership with the Paris-based Liaison Officer.
  • Establish development strategies for higher education, university cooperation, and research programs.
  • Maintain and develop the donor database and relations with individual donors and prospects.
  • Supervise the work of the Development and Partnerships Department, which is also responsible for coordinating internal and external events organized at Villa Albertine in New York, and for processing applications for honorary medals bestowed by the French Republic (Légion d’honneur, Arts et Lettres, etc.).
  • Cultivate financial resources for the broader institution by proposing projects to enhance Villa Albertine’s headquarters, located in the historic Payne Whitney Mansion on Fifth Avenue (privatization of spaces, etc.).
  • Liaise with the Albertine Foundation (501c3) and its Board of Directors. Provide administrative support to the Albertine Books Foundation (501c3) and its Board of Directors.

Profile Insights

I. Professional Experience and Skills

  • Previous experience in development and fundraising, including relations with high-level donors.
  • Strong understanding of fundraising principles and strategies, with experience with endowments and capital campaign.
  • Experience in team management.
  • Knowledge of American and ideally French cultural and philanthropic communities, with experience in establishing international partnerships.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience in speech writing.
  • Rigor and organizational skills.

II. Language Requirements

  • Fluency in English and French.

III. Computer Skills

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 (including SharePoint)

Job Details

  • This is a 100% in-person position based in New York City.
  • Institut Français des Etats-Unis – Villa Albertine, 972 Fifth Avenue New York, NY 10075
  • At will employment with a 6-month trial period.
  • Occasional availability for events on weekends and in the evenings.

  • Gross Salary: 8,077 USD/month, full-time basis with a monthly transportation allowance of $120.
