French performing artists Matthieu Barbin and Marlène Saldana are joining Gerard & Kelly for a residency this spring at CalArts Dance, that will begin on May 27 and end on June 15, 2019.

Barbin and Saldana will be participating in Modern Living, a project originally started by Gerard & Kelly. In this new extension of their work, Gerard & Kelly mine the “ruins” of modernism--including the architecture of Le Corbusier for its radical social experiments and hidden choreographies.

As part of Modern Living, Gerard & Kelly have composed performances and videos at iconic modernist homes. From Philip Johnson’s The Glass House to R.M. Schindler’s experiment in California living, the homes featured in Gerard & Kelly’s project showcase relationships that were as experimental as their designs.

At the intersection of dance, performance, and the moving image, the project innovates the uses and preservation of modern architecture, creates intimate exchanges between spectators and performers, and opens these homes to a broader public.

Presented by the Festival d’Automne à Paris, performances for Modern Living will take place at the Villa Savoye from September 28 to October 6, at Centre Pompidou on October 10 and at Appartement-Atelier de Le Corbusier on October 16-18.

This residency is supported by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy
