Festival Albertine: Climate Change Theater Readings

Part of Festival Albertine 2019

On Saturday, Nov. 9 and Sunday, Nov. 10, Festival Albertine 2019: The Climate Moment curated by Bill McKibben will feature short theater readings related to climate change prior to panel discussions.

These readings include texts by David Lescot (France), Angella Emurwon (Uganda), Amahl Khouri (Jordan/Germany), Madeline Sayet (Mohegan), and Lenora Champagne (USA);  the later four texts were commissioned by Climate Change Theatre Action (CCTA). The staged readings are directed by Thomas Peterson

Prophet of the Apocalypse written by David Lescot

The text Prophet of the Apocalypse is an excerpt of the production “Les Glaciers Grondants” by David Lescot (it premiered in 2015, a commission of Théâtre de la Ville,  Paris, as part of COP 21)

DAVID LESCOT (France):  Author, stage director and musician, David Lescot is an associate artist of Théâtre de la Ville, Paris. His writing, like his stage work seeks to mix theatre with non-dramatic forms, in particular music.  David’s work has been rewarded with several prizes (Prize of the Best French Speaking Creation, 2007; New Talent (Révélation) Molière Award in 2009 and his plays are published by Editions Actes Sud  and translated into English, German, Polish, Italian, Russian. Lescot also directs opera such as Mozart’s La Finta Giardiniera (2014 at Opéra de Lille), among others. His work Les Ondes magnétiques was presented by La Comédie-Francaise –Théâtre du Vieux-Colombier in his own staging, a second collaboration with the famous troupe.

Bare Spaces written by Angella Emurwon

ANGELLA EMURWON (Uganda) is an award-winning playwright, stage director, and filmmaker. Her first full-length play, Strings, was selected to open the 2017 Kampala International Theatre Festival. Strings received dramatic readings at the 2014 Kampala International Theatre Festival and at the 2015 PEN World Voices International Play Festival. When she is not dreaming and writing in small-town Tororo, she is a screenwriting mentor for the Maisha Film Labs (East Africa) and a willing odd-jobs doer.

Oh How We Loved Our Tuna written by Amahl Khouri

AMAHL KHOURI (Jordan/Germany) is a Jordanian documentary playwright and theatre maker based in Munich. Khouri is the author of three plays,including No Matter Where I Go (Beirut 2014) and She He Me, staged in a reading at the Münchner Kammerspiele in December 2016. Khouri is the recipient of a Rosenthal Emerging Voices fellowship from PEN USA and was a member of the Lincoln Center Director’s Lab in 2013. Her work has been published in several U.S. journals and in the International Perspectives on Where Performance Leads Queer anthology.

Interview with a Polar Bear written by Lenora Champagne

LENORA CHAMPAGNE (USA) is a writer, performer, translator and director.  Her solo, Memory's Storehouse, which she performed in New York and Tokyo, is published in the current issue of Performance Research. Traps, an intimate conversation in a public space, a solo performed in parks and community centers in New York City, is published by No Passport Press in Stages of Resistance: Theatre and Politics in the Capitalocene. No Passport also published three of her plays in the collection, New World Plays. "Interview with a Polar Bear" is adapted from her play, Staying Afloat, which she directed in the Ice Factory Festival at the Ohio Theatre.  She is currently working on a new play, Feeding on Light, about Simone Weil.  Champagne is Professor of Theatre and Performance at Purchase College, SUNY.

Founded in 2015, Climate Change Theatre Action (CCTA) is an initiative of The Arctic Cycle, a New York-based nonprofit organization that uses theatre to foster dialogue about the global climate crisis, create an empowering vision of the future, and inspire people to take action.
