Serge Bromberg Presents: Treasures from the Silent Era

Film preservationist and founder of Lobster Films Serge Bromberg presents “Retour de Flamme,” a lively journey through once-lost film archives from around the world. In this edition, Bromberg presents a first look at the HFPA’s ongoing restoration of THE BLACK PIRATE, the Douglas Fairbanks-starring high seas adventure, which made its world premiere at the Egyptian Theatre at the height of the silent era in 1926. Bromberg will present clips of this stunning work-in-progress, which is being overseen by director Alexander Payne.

His tour through the silent era will then venture through the hilarious cinemas of Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton, as well the famous Lumière brothers, whose Cinematograph machine turns 125-years-old this year. Lastly, his presentation will explore the fantastical cinema of the magician-turned-filmmaker Georges Méliès. Featuring clips and his own live musical accompaniment, Bromberg tells the nearly unbelievable story of how he rediscovered a trove of Méliès’ lost films, which earned him the title of the “Indiana Jones of lost films."
