Machines à écrire : Georges Didi-Huberman

This October, New York University is hosting a virtual conference with the prize winning author Georges Didi-Huberman to highlight his exceptional career.

Georges Didi-Huberman is a French philosopher and art historian. He is also a lecturer at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS), and the author of several books including BarkSurvival of the Fireflies and Confronting Images Questioning the Ends of a Certain History of Art.

After reading multiple testimonies and consulting archives on the Warsaw ghetto, Georges Didi-Huberman began to write Éparses, his latest novel published in France in 2020 by Les Éditions de Minuit which combines images and texts in a moving way. The book is made up of previously unseen images secretly assembled by Emanuel Ringelblum and his comrades from the Oyneg Shabes group between 1939 and 1943. Like a true anthropologist of the image, he exposes the terrible daily life in the ghettos through thirty-five thousand pages of letters, statistics, poems, and even popular songs where cruelty and fragile hope are mixed.
