Les Arts Florissants and Puppeteer Basil Twist at Opéra Comique

"Titon et L'Aurore" at Opéra Comique.

A new production of the Paris Opera Comique, Titon et L'Aurore, just opened.

It is visible for free online on medici.tv until April 19.

The New York based puppeteer Basil Twist makes his international debut as an all-in-one director and designer of the Baroque opera-ballet Titon et L'Aurore, a collaboration with Les Arts Florissants - William Christie.

The 1753 opera-ballet Titon et L'Aurore by Jean-Joseph Mondonville follows the tumultuous and seemingly unbreakable liaison between l’Aurore (“Dawn”), a goddess running from her immortal fate, and shepherd Titon. A tale and an allegory in which, Aurore, the fugitive, Titon, the shepherd, are in love. Confusion sets in, nymphs and fauns are drawn into the story's web.

Trained in France in puppetry (at ESNAM in Charleville Mezieres) in the 90s, Basil Twist performs visual extravaganzas. Statutes, deities, and elements come to life to the sound of the Art Florissants, impeccably conducted by William Christie.

The title roles are interpreted by star tenor Reinoud Van Mechelen and acclaimed soprano Gwendoline Blondeel, with Julie Roset as l’Amour, Emmanuelle de Negri as Palès, as well as Marc Mauillon and Renato Dolcini as Éole (Aeolus) and Prométhée (Prometheus).

Basil Twist is also the founder and director of the Dream Music Puppetry program at the Here Arts Center in New York.
