Virtual Talk With Gisèle Sapiro: Can One Separate the Work from the Author?

Hannah Assouline, 2021

Peut-on dissocier l'œuvre de l'auteur ? Can one separate the work from the author? French sociologist and author Gisèle Sapiro begs the question in her book of the same title, published in 2020. In this virtual talk, she will discuss the themes of the book and the hot-button issues and scandals it evokes: from the Nazi pasts of great thinkers such as Martin Heidegger to the polemic surrounding some of our most celebrated contemporary artists.

Gisèle Sapiro is CNRS Research Director and Director of Studies at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS), member of the Academia Europeae. She is a specialist in the sociology of intellectuals, literature and translation, and the author of La Guerre des écrivains, 1940-1953 (ed. Fayard, trans. by Duke UP), La Responsabilité de l'écrivain. Littérature, droit et morale en France XIXe-XXIe siècle (ed. Seuil) and La Sociologie de la littérature (ed. La Découverte).
