Camille Walala: Permanent Mural at Industry City

Part of Oui Design 2018

A purveyor of positivity, Camille Walala creates with vibrant colors and bold patterns. From micro to macro scale, her work harnesses optimistic typography and exuberant geometries to activate environments that stimulate the senses and inspire joy. A graduate in Textile Design from the University of Brighton, she launched her eponymous fashion and textiles brand in 2009. As her signature “tribal pop” style gathered widespread attention in the field of interior design, she began to create large-scale public art and initiate high-profile collaborations with international brands and publications.

This May, Camille Walala tackles her tallest building to date. The artist has created high-impact graphic murals and now-iconic fascia designs in cities all over the world, but the seven-storey Brooklyn building she is transforming for WantedDesign NYC 2018 will be the largest facade she has reinvented anywhere and both her biggest commission she has undertaken.

WantedDesign has commissioned Camille Walala to create a permanent monolithic mural for the facade of a prominent but aesthetically neglected building in Industry City, Sunset Park. The completed work will be unveiled during NYCxDESIGN, May 17-21. The design is produced by Industry City based EverGreene Architectural Arts using French paint custom color palette from Ressource.

I’m thrilled to be producing a design for a 40m building – my tallest so far. The design has been inspired by the architecture of the building, particularly the repetition of the windows. The site is bathed in the most beautiful colors at sunset, which has inspired my palette for the project. I’m really excited about this design – I am producing something quite different…
