We Are at Home, a Multi-User Interactive VR Premieres at Tribeca

“What does the hangman think about when he goes home at night from work?”

A VR multi-user installation based on Carl Sandburg’s 1922 poem “The Hangman at Home,” "We Are at Home" by directors Michelle and Uri Kranot, is an immersive experience that explores themes of acknowledgement and participation, as well as the awkward intimacy that comes with being human. This unique animated interactive work is a bridge between the digital, performing and visual arts, incorporating the latest innovative technology. At its core is the connection between spectator, witness and accomplice. Participants are invited into a series of stories and rooms, and as part of a shared experience, they will question their own accountability and the role of the individual within the collective.

Produced by Late Love Production (Denmark), Floréal Films (France), Miyu Productions (France) and the National Film Board of Canada (Canada), the interactive VR experience will premiere at the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival in New York City and is available to experience during the Thursday, June 10 media day at the Spring Studios building (50 Varick Street) on the fifth floor in the dedicated Storyscapes area.

“We are absolutely delighted to take part in this incredible show,” said "We Are at Home" Director Michelle Kranot. ”It gives us an opportunity to really shine light on Carl Sandburg’s work. His authentic, provoking and contemporary words sent us on a complex and deeply personal journey; but it was always about having strangers engaging and participating. We are very thankful to the dedicated team who bring our vision to global audiences and therefore to life.”

In "We Are at Home", hand painted animation becomes a playful interactive exploration. As part of a shared virtual reality experience, attendees are invited into a series of stories and rooms. The intimacy of a hybrid space, simultaneously public and domestic is the set up for animated characters, musical objects and fellow avatars. With a focus on technology-mediated social interactions – the experience peaks with a call-to-action. No longer theatrical or observational, it becomes a moral question of who will take action, who will follow or who will resist — and that changes everything.

"We Are at Home" is one of three outputs based on the poem "The Hangman at Home" (1922) by Carl Sandburg. The single-user experience "The Hangman at Home - VR" was awarded the Grand Jury Prize for best VR immersive work at the 77th Venice Film Festival, La Biennale di Venezia and has now been selected for the Art Directions programme at IFFR International Film Festival Rotterdam. The short film The Hangman at Home premieres at Krakow Film Festival 2021.
