This is the story of a misunderstanding. Young Guillaume, fascinated by his mother, is convinced that he shares the most precious of secrets with her: contrary to appearances he is in fact not a boy... but a girl! And so begins a long quest in search of his identity.

Jeannette raises her two children alone, with her meager cashier's salary, in L'Estaque, a working-class district of northern Marseille. Marius is the watchman at a former cement works today being demolished. Their meeting is not an easy one. Apart from their social position, both are encumbered by emotional baggage.

Twenty-year-old Sofia lives with her parents in Casablanca, Morocco. Following a denial of pregnancy, she finds herself illegally giving birth to a baby out of wedlock. The hospital gives her 24 hours to provide the identification papers confirming the child's father before alerting the authorities.

Yvon, delivery driver for a domestic heating oil company, is unjustly accused of having attempted to pass off a forged five hundred franc note in a café. A trial follows, then he loses his job. It's the beginning of an infernal spiral, ultimately leading to tragedy for the unfortunate Yvon.
