Discover Ajoyo's New Album, War Chant

On May 22, Ayoyo's new album, War Chant, will be released. It has already been granted the Best World Music (EP category) award at the Independent Music Awards.

Alongside saxophonist/bandleader Yacine Boularès, this second album features vocalist Sarah Elizabeth Charles, keyboardist/producer Jesse Fischer, bassist Kyle Miles, guitarist Michael Valeanu, and drummer Philippe Lemm. They are joined by modern jazz talents such as vibraphonist Joel Ross and South African singer Vuyo Sotashe. Energetic and empowering, it celebrates life but also calls for social and racial justice.

Ajoyo is the project of multi-reed player Yacine Boularès, a mystic blend of traditional African, jazz and soul. More than just music, it is a joyful ceremony, a full experience that brings musicians and audiences closer.

Ajoyo chants in the name of Tony Allen, Oum Khalsoum, Charlie Parker, and Donnie Hathaway. Stomping towards you like a dancer, with open arms and horns, bells and basses interwoven like the fabric of a ceremonial dress, Ajoyo speaks the language of the talking drum with a New York accent. The project is inspired by various encounters and influences, as Yacine assembled a group that would reconcile his North African and Western heritages.

About Yacine Boularès

Based in New York and originally from France & Tunisia, Yacine Boularès has played the sax and composed and arranged music for Cameroonian musicians, such as the former Fela Kuti drummer Jojo Kuo, Martino Atangana, the Haitian Kompa legend Tabou Combo, and Placido Domingo for his latest album, Encanto Del Mar.

His next project Ifriqiya is supported by the Jazz & New Music, a program of FACE Foundation, in partnership with the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the United States.
