The Victoires du Jazz 2020

Last month, the Academy of Victoires du Jazz presented its list of winners for its 2020 edition. Because of the pandemic, the award ceremony took the form of a musical film, a documentary directed by Thierry Teston (available in France until July, 2021), honoring the different possible variations of jazz. While performing live, each artist interprets a title with their musicians and discusses their work.

Here are the 2020 laureates:

  • Instrumental Artist of the year ex-aequo: Laurent Coulondre and Paul Lay.
  • Vocal Artist of the Year: Leïla Martial.
  • Group of the year ex-aequo: Dal Sasso Big Band, Magma and Trio Viret.
  • Album of the year: « Cooking » by Géraldine Laurent.
  • Revelation of the year ex-aequo: Macha Gharibian and Christophe Panzani.
  • World Music Album of the year: « Visto en el Jueves »  de Rocío Márquez.
  • Victory of Honour: Orchestre National de Jazz, with musical director Frédéric Maurin.

Among this year's winners is Christophe Panzani, who was awarded Revelation of the year.  Christophe Panzani is a Jazz & New music 2020 grantee, a program of the FACE Foundation and the Cultural Services of the French Embassy with his project THIEFS, along with fellows Keith Witty, David Frazier Jr., Edgar Sekloka and Guillermo E. Brown.

About the Victoires du Jazz

The Victoires du Jazz is an annual French awards ceremony devoted to jazz music. Starting in 1986, jazz musicians received awards during Les Victoires de la Musique. Then, from 1994 to 2002, prizes in jazz were integrated into Les Victoires de la Musique Classique. Finally, in 2002, Les Victoires du Jazz ("Victories of Jazz"), a special ceremony dedicated exclusively to jazz artists, was created.
