Where does Make Music Miami come from?
It all started in France in 1982, when the French Government decided to organize a national music festival, where everyone would be able to listen to free music all day long. Nowadays on June 21st in every French city you can find free concerts in the streets, bars and restaurants. From shower singing to professional musicians, there's music for everyone. Today, it is a global music festival, that showcases all styles of musical performances.
How did this festival cross the Atlantic to arrive in Miami?
A young woman from the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in Miami started to organize the first edition of what was still called “Fête de la musique” in 1997. During the first edition, musicians were playing all along Lincoln Rd. Volunteers and members of the Cultural Services went from group to group to bring them water and little sandwiches in a friendly atmosphere. Even the rain couldn’t stop the festival! People sheltered within the Miami Beach Community Church, and after a short break, when the sun came out, they resumed their walk and started to listen to the music again.
That’s the story of Make Music Miami!
