Odile Gakire Katese Receives First Gilder/coigney International Theatre Award

On Sunday October 16th, Rwandan playwright, novelist, poet, director and humanitarian Odile Gakire Katese will receive the first Gilder/Coigney International Theatre Award. The award, create by the League of Professional Theatre Women, will be presented to the artist at the Cultural Services of the French Embassy.

Katese was Playwright in Residence at the Sundance Institute Theatre Lab in 2008 (through which she last appeared at the Segal Center, in 2009); created a dance theatre piece entitled Des Espoirs, about rebuilding after trauma, which has been performed in France; founded Amizero Kompagnie, Rwanda’s first professional contemporary dance company; and founded Ingoma Nshya (Women’s Initiative), the country’s first women’s drumming group—among other achievements.

On Monday October 17, the CUNY Graduate Center will present an all-day celebration of women in international theatre featuring Odile Gakire Katese.
