NEW YORK, July 6, 2017— Coinciding with Bastille Day, also known as French National Day, on July 14th, 2017, the free outdoor French film festival Films on the Green will screen the 1938 film noir Port of Shadows (Le Quai des brumes) directed by Marcel Carné. Port of Shadows was selected for the festival by guest curator Laurie Anderson. The screening will take place at 8:30 PM at Tompkins Square Park.
Based on a novel by Pierre Mac Orlan, Port of Shadows features a screenplay written by Jacques Prévert. In the film, Jean, an army deserter, hitchhikes his way into Le Havre looking for a place to hide until he can leave the country on one of the many ships anchored there. He never expects to become embroiled in a dispute between local “tough” guy Lucien and wealthy but shady shopkeeper Zabel. Nor does he expect to fall in love with the beautiful Nelly.
With an “amazing glistening cinematography and beautiful dialogue”— Laurie Anderson, Port of Shadows is known as one of the first “film noir” productions. Under the direction of Marcel Carné (Le Jour se lève, The Devil’s Envoys, Children of Paradise), the film stars Jean Gabin, Michel Simon, and Michèle Morgan. In 1939, the film was the winner of the Prix Louis-Delluc.
Laurie Anderson is a writer, director, visual artist and vocalist who created groundbreaking works that span the worlds of art, theater, and experimental music. Her recording career, launched in 1981, includes the soundtrack to her feature film “Home of the Brave” and “Life on a String” (2001). She is a recipient of the prestigious Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize (2007) and the Yoko Ono’s Courage Award for the Arts for that project (2016). Anderson has published seven books and her visual work has been presented in major museums around the world.
The screening of Port of Shadows (1h31) is free and open to the public and will take place in Tompkins Square Park on Friday July 14th, 2017 at 8:30pm. DJs from New York University’s radio station, WNYU 89.1 FM will spin French music on-site before the screening. The film will be shown in French with English subtitles.
In its landmark 10th year, Films on the Green invited 10 guest curators—some of the most creative and compelling filmmakers, actors, and artists of our time–to select one film each for the summer’s program. The guest curators include: Wes Anderson, Jim Jarmusch, James Ivory, Saul Williams, Isabella Rossellini, Wanda Sykes, Laurie Anderson, Matthew Weiner, Matías Piñeiro, and Amy Hargreaves.
